Add house battery

Power your BRNKL 5G and monitor battery voltage by connecting a house battery.

Do not connect wiring to the battery terminal while running cables. Complete all wiring preparation steps first, then make the battery connections last.

What you need

Tools

  • Heat gun or butane torch

  • Wire stripper and crimper tool

  • 2.5 mm flathead screwdriver (included with BRNKL)

Supplies

  • Marine grade wire, 18 AWG (red)

  • Marine grade wire, 18 AWG (black or yellow)

  • 2× heat-shrink ring terminals, 22–18 AWG — one sized to your battery terminal, one to common ground

  • Heat-shrink butt connector, 22–18 AWG

  • In-line fuse holder, 18 AWG, ATC/ATO

  • 3 A fuse, ATC/ATO

  • Cable ties and cable tie mounts

Run wiring

  1. From the BRNKL, run a red wire to a constant, unswitched house battery positive terminal.

  2. Run a black wire from the BRNKL to a common ground terminal.

  3. Leave 20 cm (8") of slack at each end. Route wires through conduit or wiring channels where possible and secure with cable ties.

Prepare battery terminal wiring

  1. At the battery end, trim any excess red wire. Strip 10 mm (½") of insulation from the end.

  2. Strip 10 mm from one fuse holder lead. Crimp the red wire and the fuse holder lead together with a heat-shrink butt connector. Heat-seal the connection.

  3. On the other fuse holder lead, strip 10 mm and crimp on a ring terminal sized to fit your battery terminal. Heat-seal.

Prepare ground wiring

  1. At the ground end, trim any excess black wire. Strip 10 mm of insulation.

  2. Crimp on a ring terminal sized to fit your ground terminal. Heat-seal.

Prepare BRNKL end

  1. At the BRNKL end of both wires, trim any excess and strip 5 mm (¼") from each wire end.

Connect to the BRNKL

  1. In the app, disarm the unit before making any connections.

  2. On the bottom of the BRNKL, pull the green connector to remove it.

  3. On the connector, loosen the screws above slots 10 and 14.

  4. Insert the red wire (+) into slot 10. Tighten the screw firmly.

  5. Insert the black wire (−) into slot 14. Tighten the screw firmly.

  6. Reattach the connector: align it with the slot on the BRNKL, press firmly to seat, then tighten the screws at each end.

  7. Secure the wires with cable ties.

Slot 10 is the third slot from the left (marked +). Slot 14 is the rightmost slot (marked −). See BRNKL Connections for the full connector diagram.

Connect to the battery

  1. Make sure there is no fuse in the fuse holder before connecting.

  2. Attach the fuse holder ring terminal to the positive battery terminal.

  3. Attach the black wire ring terminal to the common ground terminal.

  4. Secure all wiring with cable ties.

  5. Insert a 3 A fuse into the fuse holder.

Test the connection

  1. Wait 15 minutes after inserting the fuse — the BRNKL needs time to check in.

  2. Open the BRNKL app.

  3. From Map or Graphs, select the grid view and look for Battery 1. A voltage reading (e.g. 12.4 V) confirms a successful connection.

Set house battery settings

  1. In the app, go to Settings > Devices > Battery 1.

  2. Turn on Monitor and Alert.

  3. Set Name to House battery and Decimal places to 1.

  4. Set voltage alert thresholds:

    • 12 V battery: High = 14.5 V, Low = 11.5 V

    • 24 V battery: High = 29.0 V, Low = 23.0 V

  5. Save settings.
