Add wired smoke detector

This page covers the device-specific wiring for a System Sensor 2012J or 4WTAR-B wired smoke detector. For general input setup and activity settings, see Add input device.

For BRNKL 5G wiring, see Add wired smoke detector. Wiring differs between the two systems.

Both supported detectors use a relay output that closes when smoke is detected, applying voltage to a BRNKL input channel to trigger an alert.

Prerequisites

  • System Sensor 2012J or 4WTAR-B smoke detector

  • 12–24 V DC power and common ground

  • One available BRNKL Blue input channel

  • Marine-grade wiring tools and connectors

Wiring

On the BRNKL Blue, the relay common (C) terminal connects to +12/24 V DC. This differs from the BRNKL 5G wiring, where the relay common connects to ground.

Install the detector

  1. Mount the detector following the manufacturer's instructions — typically on the ceiling or high on a wall where smoke reaches it quickly.

  2. Connect power and ground (terminals as listed above). Use a fused supply where possible, and use the same ground reference as the BRNKL Blue.

  3. Connect the relay common (C) terminal to +12/24 V DC.

  4. Connect the relay normally open (NO) terminal to an available BRNKL input channel.

When smoke is detected, the relay closes and voltage is applied to the BRNKL input, triggering an alert.

Configure

In BRNKL Device Manager, go to Settings > Inputs, select the input channel the detector is wired to, and configure:

  • Set Input Type to Smoke Alarm (or an appropriate digital input type).

  • Set Alert When to match the state the relay produces when smoke is detected.

  • Enable Critical Alert so smoke notifications are sent even when BRNKL is disarmed.

Test the detector to confirm the expected alert is triggered.

Notes

  • Secure all wiring and provide strain relief.

  • Test the detector regularly.

  • The 4WTAR-B supports interconnect wiring for up to 12 smoke alarms — when one triggers, all connected alarms sound. See the System Sensor installation manual for details.
